How do district administrators set Khan Academy implementation goals?
Khan Academy District administrators can set target goals to more effectively track, monitor, and communicate their district's goals for student learning on Khan Academy. Setting a target goal can help lead to a successful Khan Academy implementation.

How to set a target goal:
Target goals can be made via these 3 methods:
1. The goal setting pop-up which shows upon login for eligible users.
NOTE: Selecting a goal from the pop-up results in 3 goals automatically being set for your district. We recommend then customizing these target goals from your administrator dashboard.
2. The blue "Set a goal" button on the Administrator Dashboard for eligible users. Clicking on this will open the same pop-up modal from option #1 above
3. Clicking the "Add target" link located on the Administrator Dashboard next to each of the available target goal categories
How to edit a target goal:
To edit a target goal, click the "Edit" link from the link located on the Administrator Dashboard next to each of the existing target goal
Which target goals are available and what do they mean?
The target goals available to be set on the pop-up are:
1. Students reaching grade level proficiency in math.
Selecting this results in 3 goal targets being set:
- Activation - 80% for all users
- Course Mastery - 80% completion for the chosen Khan Academy courses by the end of the school year
- Skills to Proficient - students will aim to reach proficiency on two Khan Academy skills per week
2. Students achieving college readiness with Digital SAT prep
Selecting this option will set 3 district target goals:
- Activation - 80% for all users
- Course Mastery for DSAT Reading & DSAT Math courses - 80% course completion by the end of the school year
- Skills to Proficient - students will reach proficiency on two Khan Academy skills per week.
3. Students filling in gaps in prerequisite learning
Selecting this option will set 3 district target goals:
- Activation - 80% for all users
- Skills to Proficient - students will reach proficiency on two skills per week.
- Learning Time - students will spend 30 minutes per week practicing on Khan Academy.
4. Enabling students to explore AI for learning
Selecting this option will set 3 district target goals:
- Activation - 80% for all users
- Khanmigo usage - 50% of students are active on Khanmigo each week.
- Skills to Proficient - students will reach proficiency on two skills per week.
5. Other
Typing in a goal and clicking "Save" on the Goal Setting Pop up will still set three district targets:
- Activation - 80% for all users
- Skills to Proficient - students will reach proficiency on two skills per week.
- Learning Time - students will spend 30 minutes per week practicing on Khan Academy.
However, once you complete the pop-up screen, the goals are highly customizable from the administrator dashboard. We recommend then customizing these automatically set target goals from your administrator dashboard.
After completing the Goal Setting set up modal, you will have the ability to edit or set targets for the following categories:
- Account activation
- Course Mastery targets for your selected course(s)
- Skills to Proficient
- Learning Minutes

Khanmigo Usage
- (If your district has not purchased Khanmigo, you will not be prompted to set Khanmigo usage targets.)
Who can access the Goal Setting feature?
Only district Super Admins have access to the Goal Setting feature. To be a Super Admin, you must be a district-wide administrator and have access to the In-Product Admin Rostering feature.
How to verify if you have Super Admin access:
- Log in to your Khan Academy account.
- Ensure that you are on your Administrator Dashboard.
- In the left-hand navigation bar, go to Admin Tools. Verify that you have access to the Manage Administrators tool.
What targets does Khan Academy recommend for efficacious use and student learning outcomes?
- Account activation - Khan Academy recommends that 80% of students have activated their accounts.
- Course Mastery targets - Khan Academy recommends that students achieve 80% course mastery for the courses that support the district’s learning objectives.
- Skills to Proficient - Khan Academy recommends that students reach Proficiency on 2 skills per week and 60 skills in one school year.
Monitoring progress toward district goals
District staff members with access to Khan Academy administrator reports can view and monitor district targets set by Super Admins through the below options:
Administrator Home Page
On the Administrator Home Page, admins can view district targets and if the district met its target for a specific date range. Admins can view this data for any school with which their account is associated.
Administrator Progress Reports
To monitor progress for specific schools, classes, or users, click View Report. From here, admins can view progress toward district targets for more granular data sets within a selected timeframe.
Schools or user groups meeting district targets will have a green check mark noted.
