What does a Writing Coach assignment look like to my students?
Updated
The Writing Coach activity is split up into four parts that your students will complete as separate sections:
- Understanding the assignment: Students will view the essay instructions you’ve provided and have the opportunity to ask Khanmigo clarifying questions.
- Outlining: Students will outline the main points of their essay, including the thesis statement, main arguments and reasoning, and any external pieces of evidence along with its source. Khanmigo can support them and provide feedback if requested, but will not provide any of the outline content for the student.
- Note that if a student pastes more than 10 words into the “Thesis/Claim,” “Main point/Topic,” or “Reasoning/Explanation” sections of their outline, you will see a “Questionable” originality flag on their report (Students are not alerted to these flags).

- Drafting: Students will write the first draft of their essay using the outline they crafted in the previous stage.
- Note that if a student copies more than 15 words (that did not come from their outline) into their draft, you will see an originality flag on their report with details for you to review.

- Revising: Students will review personalized feedback from Khanmigo and use it to revise their essay. Khanmigo won’t tell students exactly what to write, but will provide suggestions for how to improve their work before marking their essay as complete.
