How does the originality flag work?
When viewing student progress on a Khan Academy Writing Coach assignment, you might see that an essay was flagged for originality.
What does it mean if a student essay has an originality flag?
An originality flag refers to the potential instance of plagiarism detected by the system.
How does it work?
Writing Coach identifies instances where the student has pasted text from an unknown source, defined as any source outside of Writing Coach. This means from another tab/window or app like Microsoft Word.
What triggers a flag?
An originality flag is raised in the following instances when a student:
ACTION | FLAG SEVERITY |
Pastes more than 10 words into “Thesis/claim” | Questionable flag |
Pastes more than 10 words into “Reasoning/explanation” | Questionable flag |
Pastes between 15-50 words into the essay |
Questionable flag |
Pastes more than 50 words into the essay |
Critical flag |
Two or more originality flags will raise a critical flag, even if none of the individual flags are critical.
Once a flag has been raised, it will be displayed in your report.
- Even if a student erases their flagged content, the flag will remain.
Note: This flag does not impact the student experience in any way. The student is not informed a flag was raised.
