How do I assign an essay?

Assigning your class a Khan Academy Writing Coach assignment is simple! Just follow these steps:

You can start a new essay from two places:
- From the Writing Coach page, click on "Create a new assignment"
- OR From your class’ main dashboard, click “Assign Khanmigo” on the left hand panel. Then, select the “Writing Coach” activity from the list of options then click "Assign"

Choose the assignment type

There are two types to choose from:
- Full essay-writing experience: Writing Coach guides the student through the entire writing process (understanding, outlining, drafting, and revising).
- Essay feedback and revision: The student already has a draft of an essay. Writing Coach will provide feedback to help them make revisions to the essay.

Enter the assignment details for the essay

- Assign to your chosen class and select the due date/time
- Click “Create assignment” to submit the assignment and notify your students.

To view student progress and edit your assignment, click on "My assignments" from the Writing Coach page, or click "Manage" under "Assignments" in Khan Academy.
- Clicking on the ellipsis on the far right hand of the assignment will allow you to edit it.
Note: You will be able to edit almost all essay instruction details as long no one has started the essay. Once one student begins the essay, you will only be able to edit the assigned student(s) and the due date/time.
