How can we help?

Why is my total skill level higher than all my individual course levels combined?

Updated

Great attention to detail!

Yes, there are situations where your total skill level might be higher than all of your individual course skill levels added up.

In the image below, the Total Level (all skill points earned), is at Level 4. This person has a total of 6 skill points.

However, if you look at the individual course levels and add them up, this person should only have 3 skill points.

Where did the additional 3 points come from?

The additional three points are from a "covered skill".

  • A covered skill is a skill that is related to the one you were working on.
    • For example, let's take the skill "adding 2 digit numbers". This skill also has a "covered" skill called "adding 1 digit numbers"
    •  This covered skill likely lives in a totally different course that you may not have taken.
  • In this (simplified) example. when you earned proficient on the skill of "adding 2 digit numbers", you also earned proficient on the covered skill.
    • This also meant you earned an additional skill point. Instead of the usual 1 skill point earned, you earned 2 skill points.
  • While all skill points earned contribute to your total level score, it doesn't appear in your list of course levels because you aren't actively participating in the course the covered skill lives in.
  • Not all skills have "covered skills"

Note: if you level down a skill that had a “covered skill”, you would lose both skill points.
