How do I use MAP Recommended Practice (Mappers) on Khan Academy?
MAP Recommended Practice— also known as Mappers— is a prototype product that teachers can use to provide their students personalized math practice on Khan Academy based on their MAP Growth test scores. Since MAP Recommended Practice is a prototype, it may change or be removed at any time.
MAP Recommended Practice is single Khan Academy course broken up into units based on your students' MAP test scores. The units include videos, articles, practice exercises, quizzes and a Unit Test.
You will see the different units listed on the lefthand side of the screen based off the RIT bands for each category.
Shortcut! If you know your students' MAP scores/RIT bands, find and click on the corresponding unit on the left-hand side. Then click the blue "Assign" button to make a Unit Mastery Goal for them to work on.
Here are some quick steps to get your students started using MAP Recommended Practice!
1. Log into your Khan Academy account and visit https://www.khanacademy.org/math/mappers.
2. The first section you will see while scrolling down the page is “You.”
- Here is where you could input a MAP Growth score to use for whole group instruction
- This is also an option for your students to log into their own Khan Academy account and input their own MAP scores. Then the students can work independently on their recommended units in the course.
3. Most teachers however, input their students' scores for them. To do this, scroll down to the "Your students" section
- If you aren't seeing the "Your students" option, please visit your Teacher Dashboard and make sure you already have a class with students added to the roster. Resource: How do I add additional classes to my Khan Academy teacher account?
4. Select which class you'd like to input the MAP Growth scores for
5. Select which MAP Growth Test is applicable to your students (Mathematics 2-5 or Mathematics 6+)
6. Input your student's scores for each category and click “Show me the recommendations!”
7. Then you will see the recommended units in the course for the student based off their RIT scores. You'll notice the units on the lefthand side of the screen have the same name as the recommendations.
The number of activities in the recommendations refers to the content items in the corresponding unit.
8. Create Unit Mastery Goals for the students based on their corresponding recommendations
You can do this by clicking on the recommended unit from the left menu, followed by clicking the blue "Assign" button in the top righthand corner.
Doing this will make sure your students see the assignment on their Learner Home when they log into Khan Academy.
Below is an example screenshot of what your students will see after you have made them a Unit Mastery Goal for their recommended MAP Units:
- Making Unit Mastery Goals will also allow you to more easily track your students' progress on your Teacher Dashboard in the "Mastery Progress" section, in addition to the tracker on the MAP Recommended Practice homepage.
9. Students then can work on any of the content in their recommended MAP units. The units include videos, articles, practice exercises, quizzes and a Unit Test.
Please note: if the students work on Khan Academy content outside of their MAP Recommended Units, it will not be counted on the MAP Recommended Practice tracker. This count only refers to the items in the specific units recommended for the student.
