Dark mode
Does Khan Academy have any plans to create a dark mode? It is so intense on the eyes having just the white background and having one would really increase my time.

I AGREE 100%
i work on khan late into the night and having the white background shining into my eyes all the time is torture
idk if they're going to make a dark mode, but i hope they do sometime soon
Hi there!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on a dark mode for Khan Academy to help you study at night. We are always working to add features that improve our site, and we love getting input from our community.
I've passed your feedback along to the team and it will be part of our conversation as we plan the future of Khan Academy.
In the meantime, you can search for browser extensions that can help you view not only Khan Academy in dark mode but other websites as well. There is an extension called "Dark Reader" that can be installed on browsers such as Google Chrome and Firefox and it works really well.
Thanks for helping improve Khan Academy!
i've heard of that and have it on my personal computer, but sadly, my school computer has blocked it :(
I am really missing this feature as well! Using an extension will render some images unreadable.
I agree, dark mode would be super helpful!
Another thing to try if you are a Windows OS user is to change to high contrast settings under "Personalization." I believe there's a general awareness among the KA development team that pages should be designed for accessibility, so hoping they'll render well under those settings.
I'm just trying it -- so far so good!
I agree, dark mode would be a great addition to KA
Yeah that would really help, since I mostly use dark mode on websites if I can.
Andrew and Khan Academy team,
We need dark mode not just for the night time, but for all times of day! I don't know if it's just because I'm diagnosed with autism, but the bright white background is rapidly draining. I can sit all day on any website with a dark mode, but the bright white light is nauseating and quickly deters me. Khan Academy should prioritize having a dark mode ASAP because it would dramatically improve the user-experience on this website. A dark mode both on the app and browser.
Side note: Sometimes I come on here as a way to productively procrastinate. When I get tired of this website because of the strain on my eyes, I turn to something like video games. Only having the bright white screen does not help your users stay awake and engaged; it does the opposite. Every website that people spend hours on has a dark mode, and there's a reason for that.
For App users, i found a work around (on anroid devices).
You can force dark mode on the app via the Developer Options.

Works freat for me, hope it helps. Cheers
I am trying to get my school Chromebook to not look like a dumpster fire, and a lot of educational websites don't have dark mode, and my district blocks any extension that is actually useful (one of the extensions only purpose is to bring me to a website I have never used)
Hi everyone,
Thank you for continuing the conversation and sharing your thoughts about dark mode!
I wanted to clarify that the Dark Reader browser extension we recommend is actually free to use. While the developers suggest a $9.99 donation, it’s completely optional—not required. The extension is also open-source, so schools and organizations can modify it if needed. Additionally, it does not collect any user data. I’ve tested this extension myself and found that it works reasonably well on Khan Academy, especially when using the "Dynamic" theme generation mode.
As for adding an official dark mode directly to Khan Academy, we definitely understand how helpful it would be, especially for those studying at night. It’s something our team has explored. However, implementing a dark mode across a platform as large and complex as Khan Academy would require significant engineering and design resources. We’d need to:
Because we focus most of our engineering and design resources on developing core learning features and keeping Khan Academy free for everyone, we haven’t been able to prioritize this yet, and it’s unlikely that a native dark mode will be available in the foreseeable future.
That said, we truly value your feedback and have shared it with our team so they can consider it as we plan future improvements. We have an existing tracker for Dark Mode requests and will continue to add new user feedback/posts to it in the future.
Thanks again for your input and for helping make Khan Academy better!
Hi! I'm curious if there's a dark mode update coming along with the new 2026 design updates shared on the recent blog post on the colour system overhaul.
Also, I like that the Android app already has dark mode by default, but I don't find the full blue background easy to read as compared to dark greys and lighter grey text that's typical of dark modes on most websites.
For regular light mode, I am curious if some form of off-white can be considered, or fonts can be made more relaxed on the interface, spotlighting the exercise questions.
In fact, some form of screen-friendly serif --- used on longform sites like Substack, New Yorker, New York times and on academic journals --- could help easy reading for practice questions, especially SAT Reading, while the Lato works perfectly as UI font.
