Art Courses for Khan Academy - Studio Art / Art Fundamentals / Traditional Animation
Hello Khan Academy, I'm an aspiring animator/concept artist and I was wondering if there would ever be any courses revolving around The Fundamentals of Art and in-depth traditional/computer animation. The closest thing anybody has to a completely free and structured online drawing course would be the lessons from the Drawabox website. If done right, it would very much be a worthwhile course for anyone aspiring to be a concept artist, animator, illustrator, etc.
The ideal art course could include the following lessons, teaching content from certain artists and resources:
Observational Drawing

- Keys to Drawing by Bert Dodson
- The Natural Way to Draw by Kimon Nicolaides
Basics of Perspective and Perspective Drawing

- Perspective Made Easy by Ernest R. Norling
Draftsmanship and Markmaking

- Drawabox Lesson 1
- Dynamic Sketching 1 by Peter Han
Form and Construction

- Construction Lessons by Stan Prokopenko
- Drawabox Lessons 2 - 7
- Dynamic Sketching 2 by Peter Han
- Fun with a Pencil by Andrew Loomis
Anatomy

- Vilppu Drawing Manual by Glenn Vilppu
- Drawing the Head and Hands by Andrew Loomis
- Constructive Anatomy by George B. Bridgman
Gesture

- Figure Drawing: Design and Invention by Michael Hampton
- Figure Drawing by Andrew Loomis
Composition

- Creative Illustration by Andrew Loomis
Light, Values, Rendering and Color Theory

- Color and Light by James Gurney
- How to Render by Scott Robertson
- Foundations of light and shadow from Sycra (on YouTube)
Animation

- Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators by Michael D. Mattesi
- The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams
- The 12 Principles of Animation from The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston
These are just a few incredible art resources that develop skills and prepare students for careers as artists or animators. If possible, Khan Academy could implement a section on the website for formal art critique amongst students with or without anonymity in order to encourage students to work outside of a bubble, be willing to take criticism, and develop their own styles. An art course such as this would be quite rigorous but it would provide what many art classes in public schools and even colleges lack, that being an actual course that prepares students for future careers and a focus more on fundamentals and principles over style and expression. That's not to say style and expression of oneself is not important, rather it can be improved with knowledge of the fundamentals. So in short, Khan Academy should have a course that teaches the fundamental skills of drawing, painting, and animation. I hope this gets upvoted and noticed!
