First state to outlaw slavery?
I just finished the video titled "The West Indies and Southern Colonies" in the Colonial section. The instructor stated that Georgia outlawed slavery around 1732 by James Oglethrone, but then permitted it in 1750 after mounting pressure to do so. When I googled, "first state to outlaw slavery," Vermont is the common answer.
If asked the question, "Which US State was the first to outlaw slavery?" would the correct answer be Vermont or Georgia? I am sure it matters that the United States had not been officially formed yet. So I am leaning towards Vermont.
Hoping someone can clear this up for me! thank you!
