I'm unable to add anything to my display name; when I try to change it on the usual profile page, it just changes back, meanwhile, the full settings page doesn't save the changes at all. Also, if I change it to just use normal letters, will I be able to use the bold/italic ones I have right now ever again?

The display name field does not currently support special characters or letters due to length restrictions, which is likely why you're being prevented from updating your name. You should be able to change your name to consist of regular characters, but special characters will not be supported for future changes if you decide to do this.
