Course Mastery Short Term Goals
Hello,
I'll introduce myself and explain my situation first, but I'll put my specific question at the bottom if you'd like to skip over that. I am a 7th grade math teacher just starting my 7th year of teaching, but only my second semester at the school where I'm teaching. I've always liked incorporating technology in my teaching and I think Khan Academy is a great website. I've actually used it more to teach myself than with my students! Luckily, my district has just started using Khan Academy and I'm really excited to get started with my students. As a district, we have been told to assign all our classes a course mastery goal for two grade levels below the students' current grade. This is to help make up for lost instruction time from when we went full remote in March. We are starting this school year 100% remote as well, but I think we will be much more prepared for it this time around.
So, since I teach 7th graders, I will be assigning them the 5th grade course mastery. I'm trying to plan for how I am going to assign and assess students' progress on Khan Academy. I downloaded the Goal Setting Template Example from the Khan for Educators course and I'm trying to use that as a base for what I will be sharing with my students. I was thinking I would try assigning 1 KA lesson a week that was on grade level (7th grade) and related to the topics we are covering that week in class and also giving them a goal for progress made on the 5th Grade course mastery. I figured this could give them something specific they know they have to complete with the 7th grade lesson and also give them a little freedom to work at their own pace with the 5th grade course mastery.
My question is this: What is a reasonable expectation for middle school students to accomplish in a week on course mastery? The templates have examples like "+4% mastery in Algebra I", but I wanted to know if there is anyone with experience who can confirm that this would be a goal that my students are likely to be able to do.
