Mathematics Pre-test?

Hello Chris! My name is Lisa Krueger and I am a Khan Academy Ambassador teaching in Chicago. This is a popular feature request, but as on now there is no baseline or pre-assessment for users to take to determine the best mission to start with; however, it has been added to the 'wish-list' being created for the Khan Academy developers. I would recommend starting your children at their grade level equivalent mission. The beauty of Khan Academy is that it is designed to fill in the gaps in a users mathematical knowledge, reinforce current knowledge, as well as push them to increase their knowledge. Your child will be routinely challenged to determine their mastery of grade level skills and they will progress accordingly. Hopefully this helps.  Hello!

Earlier this year on the 7th grade mission there were practice topics listed for each strand of the curriculum consisting of 20 questions each. They seemed to cover all topics in the strand and were the same 20 questions, regardless of performance by the students. I was hoping to use these as pre-assessments for each unit with my students next year but they seemed to have disappeared. I'm hoping they are still available somewhere on the site because they would be a valuable tool.

Maybe they still exist?

Hello Jeffrey! I am not aware of the practice questions that you mentioned as I only used the 7th grade mission. Could you explain how you accessed these practice questions previously and tell me what happens when you attempt the same process. I did review the 7th grade subject and found it was broken down into Explore, Classes, Practice, and Mission. Under the Practice section there are 7 topics each of which are broken down into a number of skills and each of those skills require students to successfully answer 7 questions to demonstrate mastery. This seems it would be a good pre-assessment for each topic. Please let me know if I can assist you further or if you have other questions, comments, or suggestions. Thank you for posting. 

This is also a shortcoming. What if your "student" is an adult and not currently in school? How would I determine what Grade Level they should start?

If there were a Math Assessment test or Math Placement test this would be much easier for me to help adults learn mathematics, especially as it relates to my field of expertise, land surveying and engineering.

I agree with J Keith Maxwell. I too am working with adult learners.

It would be great to have a math placement test that once complete, decides on the best course the student should take to fill in any gaps. 

But let me end by saying Khan Academy is spectacular!
