Why can't we reset the unit tests/quizzes after messing up? I've been at this for hours and cannot get 100% because it makes me complete the test instead of just being able to start over. How are people not complaining about this more? half the time is spent just typing fake answers to skip through so i can start over. So frustrating. Why haven't they fixed this?
A reset button might be a great idea allthough I understand the educational part by not implementing it.
I think the most annoying part is that if you miss one question (whatever the reason might be) you have to go through the whole unit test again to bring this one category to 100%. Maybe for those who are the hunters and gatherers around here, it might be a good idea tomake it possible to bring a lesson to 100% without taking the whole unit test again? This seems to be the redundant (and frustrating) part to me because when I have 9/10 topics mastered, I have to take the whole unit test again to bring it to 10/10.
Gamification is a huge motivation on this plattform ... so sure most of the users want to get 100% I guess.
Please correct me if I am wrong my opinion or if I missed out a feature to master a single topic.
I'm an adult learner. I want a reset button. Everything else has been great but this ONE thing.
Math is frustrating enough to begin with, but when stupid mistakes force me to complete the existing test and THEN do a new test, I simply just walk away from the site. I stop learning out of frustration. I find that I persevere through real math mistakes, because those ones are on me, but "unfair" challenges make me walk away. Nobody wants to continue competing for a prize (that 100% marker) when they know they already failed.
I second the idea for a setting you can turn on/off for students who have teachers/adults looking over their shoulder. For me I'd definitely turn it off, but if it's a setting, then a teacher can use it to monitor their students without putting their priorities over mine, since we'll be able to both have the cake, and be able to eat it the way we want it.
Or, as an alternate suggestion or way of implementing a change, you could put a "reset" button as default, BUT also keep a "running tally" of "tests scores" that a teacher can look at in another section. (If it doesn't exist already; I'm not a teacher and haven't fully explored all areas of the site.)
The running tally would be something the teacher can access could show the number of restarts, and what "category" of questions a student keeps failing/resetting on. It'll give the same info so they can hone in on what the kid needs to practice or re-learn, while letting a frustrated person continue in a way that pleases them instead of throwing their hands in the air and walking away because they're forced to complete a challenge they already "failed".
Because I doubt students and kids are immune to the things that frustrate me as an adult. So another method of capturing the data teacher wants while ALSO attempting to avoid frustrating the students might be worth looking at.

I'm also finding this extremely frustrating. I have slight dyslexia and though I've come up with a lot of methods to prevent this from becoming a problem, I'll misread the order of one question and BAM, welcome to "waste another 30 minutes of your time."
It's punitive and I thought I've grown up enough to attempt to improve my math skills but this frustration is really testing me. I'm accessing this as an adult and please at least let us not-cheating-at-homework people breathe a little easier. I'm so frustrated.

This makes a lot of sense why people are frustrated about this it has happened to me so many times! I also understand the people who don't want the reset button because if you took an actual test/quiz you might not necessarily be able to correct your mistakes just like the Khan Academy quizzes but going back to the other point of view if you do get a reset button then it might help you learn why you made a certain mistake. I personally think that Khan Academy should make an option of a reset button but for student learners who have coaches/teacher on Khan Academy make it up to them to have the reset button when they take the quiz/test.

There SHOULD be a reset button! I'm spending hours just trying to master this one lesson (for fun mind you) and I'm getting infuriated.
Sure adding a reset button may have some concerns for teachers, but can't you just add like a setting to maybe disable the reset ability? Would it even be that hard to implement?
Here's what I'm thinking:
1. Take in all the ideas that other people were thinking about for the reset button in the past comments.
2. Then have a 'reset button toggle' (ONLY AVAILABLE TO TEACHERS, 'cause teachers would obviously make their students join his/her class group)
3. Have the 'reset button toggle' ONLY effect test that teachers are assigning (that way if any kids completionist WANT to master other test and stuff, THEY won't get frustrated just for doing what they WANT [like me]).
That what I'm thinking. Because it's so annoying to go through 30 questions and then miss ONE question and I has to start all OVER!! Because I'm a completionist and can't stand only a 99% on a test.

Mathew Richey - very well said (and I read your name carefully and noticed only one “t” - I am constantly seeing a second “t” in my last name, even here recently when someone tipped a hat to me, so I try to be very careful in spelling people’s names). So well said that I almost forgive your use of a colloquial spelling of “because”.
Regarding the reset button toggle - For those of us who are adult independent learners, with no teachers or coaches, would this mean that we would not have this toggle? And would this mean that we would always have reset on or always have reset off?
I also do every test until I get 100% and want to be able to restart.
And Khan Academy, if you do implement this, please ensure that it is rolled out to the iPad, iPhone, Android phone, and Android tablet platforms the same day on which it becomes available on the website, including any toggle functionality.
To all of the people in these posts I 100% agree with you, on this topic. As a person who wants to see everything 100%, it really bugs me when I have to start over on the unit test whenever I get one small mistake. Now this may be because for productivity, but some people make some mistakes such as a calculation mistake which they can fix easily. So, all in all I support this thread and hope to see it grow in the future and hopefully the "reset button" idea get implemented in the future!
What if you had the reset button but it had a password on it that parents/teachers could choose and when the students wanted there to be a reset button the parents/teachers could type in the password without showing it to the students! maybe there could be a reset button on the tests but if a student pressed it , it would send a notification to the parent/teacher and they could type in the password that they made remotely but it also would give the students an option to type in the password but whenever they put in the password if their teachers let them know it then it would notify the parents/teachers and they would have the option to turn it off remotely . I think the password would work out well for adult learners too because adult learners wouldn't necessarily have teachers on KA so they could type the password on their own.

I've since stopped playing in here because of this issue. Like some commenters above, I'm a completionist and so it galls me to have repeatedly missed answering correctly one amid hundreds of questions due to fat-fingering one single question despite knowing full well its correct answer the whole time. Forced to complete the full test is so truly annoying it makes my brain boil. Are you truly testing my knowledge or are you testing my patience instead? I'm watching this board like a hawk for that sunny day where this is resolved and I can continue progressing through all the levels safe in the knowledge that if I screw one up, I can start fresh from the beginning and get that 100% that makes it all worthwhile. I'm sure there are others just like me: doing this for fun and to refresh my skills long ago swept aside by so many other distractions. I enjoy it so much, but I'm not going to ruin it further by frustrating myself to death over a design flaw.
I've just discovered this site less than 12 hours ago and have only done just a few lessons. But even I, with my limited amount of time here, already found this to be a glaring issue. Please make it a priority to fix this, as it seriously affects user experience. As an adult learner, I'd like to continue my time here, but this one issue seriously impacts the amount of time I'd have to invest, re-taking entire tests vs simply being able to reset and continue. It's akin to forcing players in a video game to replay large sections of a level simply because they might have difficulty in one specific area. It's not "challenging", it's just frustrating and unenjoyable. I'm going to have to postpone any more time I spend here as it's only leading to wasted time. I'd rather come back and continue when this issue is resolved.
I agree that there needs to be a reset button. I've been taking the High School Geometry course, and as a completionest, I've spent numerous hours doing a quiz over and over again because I get one question wrong, usually because of a typing error. Please release new progress information on this issue soon, because the thread has existed for over a year.
I also want a restart button. Having to do a test all over again for a incorrect answer or two is just plain stupid. I'm sure doing many questions over again helps some students, but for many like me it just makes me want to give up since you need put in 20 times the work if you get one problem incorrect out of 20. I, like others also just keep guessing or press the hint button until I get an answer to skip it.
Helping someone understand a topic by challenging them to solve it is not the same as a poorly designed test system that just induces frustration to the point where it encourages laziness to relieve the frustration.
This system may make sense "as a teacher" but it doesn't make sense as a student.
I too would appreciate a 'reset' button. I too am a self-directed adult learner as I'm looking to bone up on subjects that I feel have atrophied.
Khan Academy has gone out of their way to try to game-ify the learning process by providing hits of serotonin for participants, as can be seen through the bursts of confetti on a correct answer or unit passed and achievement badges to encourage desired behaviors.
I have been on the site for a bit over a week now. While I have some specific topics I'm messing around with, I am forcing myself to work through the more basic units before settling into the more challenging ones, and I've been enjoying it, surprising myself with what I've been able to remember across decades. I hope to continue.
It is readily apparent that the effort required to hit a Level 6 100% is significantly higher than that to hit Level 5.
The testing schemes run through an assortment of material for the level, including items that are marked as 'mastered'. Doing so allows for opportunities for the candidate to fail the portions of mastered material again though inattention, a desire to concentrate on the questions they're actually seeking to master, fat-thumbing an answer or whatever and subsequently losing that 'mastered' status, often necessitating yet another run through a bunch of questions.
For example, I'm currently trying to clear Grade 3 maths. I have 13480 / 13500 points in the subject. While trying to fix that 20 point oversight, I failed a single question four into a unit test. I made a mistake, but what it was I can no longer tell you because I gave up yesterday out of sheer frustration. What I can say is that to fix the mistake I made originally along with this new mistake, I'm going to have to correctly answer at least another 25 questions, most of which will not be related to either of the topics I will not have "mastered".
As a student, it is a wildly aggravating situation and, frankly, a poor user experience, especially when the selection of questions offered include those are ambiguous or are heavily US-centric, let alone sheer stupid mistakes on my part. Students should acknowledge their mistakes, sure, but frankly, this feels discouraging and punitive.
The goal is to make the topics interesting and fun to learn to increase participation and achievement, right? Do the current mechanics do so? I contend that they do not, rather, they make for a pointless grind. We're able to take the tests as many times as we wish, and better for it.
I can understand teachers not wanting students to be able to reset specific tests, and agree that if implemented teachers should be able to enable/disable some kind of reset for their students if they wish to snapshot exact performance 'on the day'. Neither are arguments against improving an aggravating user experience for self-directed students. Either way, any attempt to hit 100% in a test still requires students to answer all questions in the test correctly.
There seems to have been significant 'internal discussion/maybe one day but it's not on the schedule yet' comments over the past year with little meaningful content. I'd be keen for comment as to where this internal discussion is either way, if it's ever likely to be addressed, and to what kind of implementation time frame it might happen in so that I can determine if this is the right kind of platform for me. It's a fantastic site, but I want to enjoy learning maths, not hate it because I see 100% scores as a goal to strive for.
Not least, I hope the alluded to internal discussion puts forward arguments as to why self-directed students should not be able to reset tests. I think we are yet to hear them.
From the self-directed learner's point of view, I imagine the argument for this feature would be much like those of single-player games ie. if any 'cheating' was going on, it's only ourselves we would be cheating as our profiles merely provide a "sense of pride and accomplishment".

I do agree with having a reset button but I also agree with you, I do want my students to understand and if not have a mini lesson. But if you are trying to complete every grade under yours, you would understand everything of course. except that you might fail because of one or two mistake out of 30 questions. for example I am a grade 7 and am trying to finish al the grades, but I cant because 90% of my time is trying to reset my test. So to conclude this comment i would love to have a reset button.
This feature request is over a year or so old now, and is highly demanded yet there remains no movement from Khan.
Because of this, to me, it highly suggests that they don't really listen to such feedback or pay it much attention.
I have stopped using most course tests and I would not recommend Kahn to my teacher colleagues at present, at least until l some form of constructive or solid feedback is given about when this is likely to happen, or if it is likely to actually happen at all.
It clearly is a useful and in demand feature, that can save time, even if it is controlled somehow (In settings for example).
Simply cutting and pasting the same fob-off text is not particularly useful or professional in a development or customer support context.
"It's on the team's radar but doesn't have a final decision for how it will work or a timeline yet. If I have updates, I'll let you know!"
That's an awful radar if its been over a year and there is still zero information and the same answers are being given. I suggest being more proactive Khan and give some honest feedback about this.
As a former teacher, I entirely understand how frustrating delays like this can be (and as someone who is currently making my way through the AP Stats courses to support my graduate school work, I would really love this reset button). The update is being actively discussed, and I do hope to have more information to relay sooner rather than later. We are a very small team, and are working on updates as quickly and deliberately as possible. We consider and appreciate all feedback, and the amount of comments on this thread has itself been part of the conversation around this feature. And so I do want to say thank you to everyone for your desire to improve Khan Academy, and for your patience.
Sorry, but this simply illustrates my point, there is nothing but excuses about why this is or is not happening,
Also, honestly, with such a service as this which is pushing itself in schools and colleges etc (seems to be a huge media and social media drive to add to this), I really don't think excuses such as "We are a very small team" are going to help. Your user base is so large now, if its unmanageable then something must be done, there is patience, and then there is poor support, especially if an issue raised by the community so much has taken more than a year to approach.
I appreciate perhaps many of your team are not full time, but if this is the case, perhaps more proportionality is required in relation to how you market khan, and how you inform users (especially schools and universities) as to your current processes and timescales.
Its a common issue to see online services push themselves publicly without the ability to back up with support. You have an excellent service here, but admittedly there is a large issue with content and support, which you rely on us as the users as a large part to inform you of. However, at present, it simply appears as if any of this user content disappears into the ether.
The reset issue button aside, I have yet to receive any reply or even notice changes to typos and mistakes for which I have given feedback from the very form offered in the tests. Also I have noticed many issues raised by users about content and videos, yet there is nothing in reply to any of these by Khan, many of the errors, typos and other issues remain. Of course there should be no expectation to promptly fix every one of these issues, but there should be a greater regard to how these issues are replied to and explained. Cut and paste excuses over months are what frustrate many I think.
Im sure many users agree you are doing an excellent and service, but as you grow, I feel a little that the back up is slipping, as an educator myself, I understand many of the dynamics here, but additionally I am a software developer also, and I am fully aware of many of the facets involved in building an efficient service. One thing above all else, is do not condescend the customer or user, if there is a problem be open and give details, but do not make excuses.

While I agree with Steve that Khan Academy moves very slowly, probably because of the small staff, I do believe that you gave us more hope this time with your reply. I honestly did not expect much progress on this and other usability suggestions over the summer because I know that the focus then is usually getting new content ready for the new academic year in countries where this occurs in the late summer.
Tracee, one more thing. Can you please remind those who are part of the active discussion that this needs to be rolled out to the iOS and Android platforms at the same time it is introduced on the web site? Some of the careless mistakes that make us wish for the reset button are more likely to occur in the apps. It would be a real shame if we don’t get this functionality and yet possibly need it more than the others! Thanks for any help in this area that you can give us.

Agreed with many above; I really hope there's a reset feature added for "mature" learners. I have carpal tunnel (and know many other tech professionals in the same boat), and the less "busy" clicking/scrolling I have to do, the better. It sucks when my hands are burned out from work and I have to give up on a test because I mis-read a question.
Maybe have a "casual" mode? That way teachers can check their students are not using it :)
