How do I use Focus mode in the Khan Academy Reimagined?
This article explains how to use Focus mode if you're a teacher participating in Khan Academy Reimagined,. If you’re a Khan Academy Districts (KAD) - rostered teacher and not in the pilot, learn more about Focus mode for districts here.
What is Focus mode?
While Khanmigo is a valuable learning tool, there may be times when you want your students to work without it. Focus mode lets you temporarily disable Khanmigo for some or all students for a specific amount of time.
How do I turn on Focus mode?

Select your class to activate Focus mode
Make sure you’re signed in and have a class rostered.
From the left-hand menu, select My Classes, then choose your class.
- At the top of your class view, select Settings, then the Khanmigo tab.
- In the Focus mode section, click Set focus mode.
- In the pop-up window, you can:
- Select students (all students or specific ones)
- Choose a duration (up to 4 hours)
- See the exact end time based on your selections
- Click Start focus mode to confirm
Can I turn Focus mode off early? Can I adjust it?
Yes! If Focus mode is already active, you’ll see:
- A list of students with Focus mode on
- How long it will remain active
- The option to turn it off early for individuals or for the whole class
- Adjust the duration if needed by selecting “Set focus mode”. The total time limit remains 4 hours.
What will my students see?
When Focus mode is turned on, students will see a message letting them know Khanmigo has been temporarily disabled by their teacher. This appears in several places:
- In any assignment or lesson
- In the Tutor me tab after they try to ask a question
- In Writing Coach when trying to start or submit an essay
Once the timer runs out, Khanmigo will become available to students again automatically.
