Backwards "Updated ___ ago" glitch

Some programs have a backward "last updated" attribute. I'm not sure why, though...

Example: https://www.khanacademy.org/computer-programming/sub-to-tea-cup/6651167780519936 and all of that user's programs have the glitch.

It's because of a special character (RLM) that users have been adding to their names lately that makes notifications from them and the Updated ___ ago text on their programs display backwards. It can also be added to program titles to make the tab title display backwards.

This is a RTLO character, or Right to Left Override. Basically it's used to reverse files and such to spoof them. My understanding on what it is is very minimal, a search query would be productive.

It's not a glitch, just an invisible character that overrides the system to make it display backwards, I think. It displays notifications backwards, and other things that @mngo pointed out.

I myself am sick of this character and would love to see someone eradicate it. Upon encountering someone with it, please kindly ask them to remove it from their name.

I did a little research about it. The reason it exists is to allow for languages that are read right to left, such as Arabic or Hebrew. It makes any character after it in a string of text display backwards, though in computer storage it is still stored as it’s left to right version.

However, hackers often use it to place malware on people’s computers, by taking their .exe malware file and adding the override character to the file name to make it appear some other type of file. Then they send it to people, usually by email, and said people open it without question, assuming it to be a harmless .doc, .pdf, etc. file. This is unimportant and rather irrelevant but pretty interesting.

I completely (and hypocritically, having had the character in my name for a short while) agree that it should be removed. It is extremely annoying and distracting, and makes my notification feed very hard to decipher. I feel it should be either banned or made non-functional on KA. From what I gather there is some way that the devs could make it stop working on the site, though I’m not 100% sure.

TL;DR: It exists for right to left languages, hackers use it to hack people, it’s very annoying and something should be done about it.
