Hello, I'm going through the 4th grade plan and I'm having a bit of trouble factoring to order fractions. I can factor the numbers without problems. But in the video...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8dIOmk_lHs the factors are not all multiplied...why?
This is not letting me arrive at the least common multiple.
multiplying all the denominators by one another will definitely give you a common multiple and allow you to combine fractions, BUT this is not necessarily the least common multiple.
Example:
1. in the case of (1/7)+(1/3)+(1/5) the least common multiple is obtained by multiplying ALL denominators
....and that least common multiple is (7*3*5)..which is 105
the simplified version of this expression would be:
(15/105)+(35/105)+(21/105)
2. in the case of (1/2)+(1/8)+(1/4) the least common multiple is simply 8, cause as he said in the video, the prime factorization of one of 8 (2*2*2) already contains the prime factorization of the other 2 and 4.
the simplified version of this expression would be:
(4/8)+(1/8)+(2/8)
