Unusual shape in an algebra equation

Occasionally on a practice test, I see an equation that does not show add, subtract, multiply, or divide. Instead it has a symbol such as a STAR or a HEART or something similar but not usually related to math. 

(Can't make those symbols on my pc so use your imagination)

Can you tell me what these types of problems are called so I can research it?
