In working with my Algebra 1 students in Khan Academy, y-intercepts are entered as points, yet most textbooks I have examined indicate that the y-intercept of a function is the y-value of the point where the graph intersects the y-axis. Why does Khan Academy have students enter y-intercepts as points rather than just numbers?

I've always referred to them as a single number but I don't see it as wrong to refer to the full point coordinates. It may help students to connect that it's just another point on the line (many of my students struggle with the idea that lines are just a series of points that satisfy an equation)
