Adam went on a long trip. For 1/6 of the distance he walked besides the river. He then walked over a bridge for 1/12 of the distance and around a lake for 1/7 of the distance and entered a valley. He walked a further 5 Kilometres across the valley. He then hired a bike and cycled for 1/2 of the total distance of the trip. He got off bike and walked for a further 4 kilometres to his destination.

What was the total distance he covered?

Hi Chetan P, the way to solve this question is figuring out how much of the distance is not accounted for in fractions.

This means you have to start converting your fractions into a fraction with a common denominator.

1/6 + 1/12 + 1/7 + 1/2 =

When you have this fraction, you can figure out what fraction of the journey the kilometers correspond to.

The whole journey, of course, is 1.

1 - (1/6 + 1/12 + 1/7 + 1/2) = (5 km + 4 km) / total distance

You should then be able to figure out the whole distance covered.
