How can Khan Academy Districts teachers create a class that is district-synced?

Updated

When a Khan Academy Districts teacher creates a class in which all the students are also district-synced, the class becomes district-synced itself.

This is designed to:

  • Unlock assignable Khanmigo activities for classes teachers manually create.

  • Give teachers flexibility in creating their own classes, while still ensuring student progress counts toward district reports.

This article will go over some details for teachers and administrators about the feature.

How class upgrade works:

  • Once a teacher creates a new class which is comprised entirely of district-synced students, behind the scenes, the class is "upgraded" to be district-synced as well.

  • Please note: Upgraded classes do not look different from other classes a teacher creates. They do not display a “District Synced” badge, and teachers will not receive any notifications when a class has been upgraded.

  • Google Classroom and Clever Library: Class upgrade applies to Google Classroom and Clever Library synced-classes as long as all the students in the classes are also rostered in a district-synced class.

Who can use the class upgrade feature?

  • Any teacher or administrator who is rostered onto Khan Academy from their district's Clever or ClassLink roster can use this feature. This includes co-teachers.

  • Administrators may need to add the teacher role onto their Khan Academy account if they are not seeing it. Here is an article on how to do this

How do I add students already connected to my account into a new class I created?

  • Glad you asked! It's super easy.

  • Here is an article on how to do it and below are the steps

    1. From your Teacher Dashboard, click the "Students" tab

    2. Select the desired students

Tip! You will know if a student is district-synced if they are already in one of your classes with the "District-synced" label. You'll also see their district-synced email in the middle column.

    3. Click "Actions" and "Add to class"

A few notes for Khan Academy District Administrators:

  • District reports: Upgraded classes appear immediately in district progress reports. Please note that activation reports may take up to an hour to update.

  • District SIS: Upgraded classes do not sync with the district SIS and are not affected by overnight roster syncs. These classes exist only within Khan Academy.

  • If a district-synced teacher creates a class with no students—this class will upgrade automatically, and remain upgraded as long as only district students are added.

  • If any student in the class does not belong to the district, the class will not upgrade. If non-district students are added later, the class will lose its district designation.

We hope this article was helpful in understanding the class upgrade feature! If you have additional questions, please contact your District Success Manager, or submit a ticket to the Khan Academy Support Team.
