How can Administrators use the Classroom Access feature to act as a Khan Academy Districts teacher?

Updated

Classroom Access is a feature which lets administrators temporarily enter their teachers’ classrooms and act as a co-teacher. When an admin uses Classroom Access, they can take all the same actions as the classroom teacher for the duration of their access. This makes it possible for administrators to:

  • Support classrooms that don’t yet have an activated teacher

  • Assist teachers who need additional support

  • Step in as a substitute teacher

Who can use Classroom access?

  • The Classroom Access feature is available for those with the Administrator Dashboard on their Khan Academy account.

  • From the Administrator Dashboard, you will see Classroom Access on the left sidebar

How do administrators enter a class using the Classroom Access feature?

  • Click Classroom Access from the left menu on the Administrator dashboard.

  • If you haven’t added any classes yet, click Add classes.

    • You can add any class in the schools you already have access to on your Khan Academy account.

    • If a teacher on the list is greyed out, it means they do not have any classes available for the admin to enter.

  • Click Enter next to the class name you'd like to join
    - Note: When you click Enter, the class will open in a new tab. To get back to your Admin Dashboard, just switch back to your original tab.

    4. That's it! Now you are a co-teacher in the class and can take actions like:

  • Making Mastery Goals and content assignments (resources on how to do this
  • View and export teacher reports showing student assignment scores (resources on this

How long will I have access to the classes?

By default, admins will have access for 7 days when you first add a class—but you can change this anytime:

  • When adding a class you can select a custom end date.

  • After adding a class, click the calendar icon next to the current expiration date and adjust it.

Note: Access ends at the close of the selected day after rostering runs. Example: If your access is set to end on Jan 1, you’ll still have access through that day. On Jan 2, access will expire unless you extend it.

Will teachers and students know I’m in their class?

Yes. While your access is active:

  • Teachers will see you listed as a co-teacher on their settings page.

  • Students will also see your name if they check the list of their teachers.
