Medical School Education Content
Hey everyone,
First off, Khan Academy changed my life. Period. I’m in medical school right now, and I genuinely don't think I'd be here without Sal’s old-school black background and colored pens showing me how things actually connect.
Which brings me to why I'm posting. Medical school learning is broken in a very specific way right now: it has turned almost entirely into brute-force memorization. Everyone is grinding thousands of pre-made flashcards a day, frantically memorizing isolated facts to survive board exams. The actual understanding? It gets completely buried. You end up knowing that Drug X causes Symptom Y without having any clue what the physiology is actually doing under the hood, and the genuine thrill of learning medicine just evaporates.
Nobody builds intuition like Khan Academy does. If there was ever a space that needed the KA touch, it’s medical school content. Think KhanAcademyDoctor, or just an upper-level clinical branch of what already exists. Short videos that throw out the rote buzzword lists and walk through the mechanics of shock, renal tubules, or loop diuretics so clearly that you can predict the patient's symptoms before anyone even tells you. Democratizing that level of education would be huge. Not just for burned-out med students trying to find the joy in the learning again, but for nursing students, PAs, international grads, and anyone who wants to truly understand human illness from the ground up.
KA's first videos surfaced when I was in highschool algebra--and I wouldn't have made it through without a few of the videos--but more importantly KA truly made me love learning, and I want to help make this happen. I'd love to help spearhead it, storyboard it, write outlines, or test out pilot videos--or even just help facilitate and/or see if this would ever be a possibility. Or, I can just be here to post and encourage a project like this.
I'm certain the idea has been on the KA brainstorming board at some point and thrown out because of the sheer amount of work it would take, but I'm posting here to encourage that idea once more. Knocking down the barriers to medical education/learning and democratizing top-tier clinical medicine fulfills exactly what Sal originally set out to do in the most powerful way imaginable.
Curious if other students feel the same memorization fatigue, and if the KA team would ever be open to running with something like this.
