Math for Elementary Education Majors
Most programs require undergraduate elementary education majors to take a course separate from other math courses called "Math for Elementary Education Majors". At my university, this is a two semester course. It is followed by a Math methods course to help with developing the methodological skills need to teach math. This is the first semester I have taught the course and at midterms we were moved online due to COVID-19. I spent a good portion of a week working to find the best solution for this particular class, having no idea how to move math instruction online and settled on trying Khan Academy for a unit of instruction. We have not gone back.
Many of the materials I need for this course are already designed and posted on Khan Academy. The challenge is they are within several other course titles and in picking and choosing sections the flow is not as nice and the option for a unit test which aligns is not always there.
I really feel this would be a great addition. It would require limited content development on your end and it would serve a group of students who we already encourage to use Khan Academy to help prepare for their PRAXIS exams and to expose them to this type of learning for potential use in the classroom.
I am planning on getting started on developing my fall course over the summer. It will be a hybrid course with assignments on Khan as well as in class labs for hands on and problem based learning experiences. My students have really appreciated the ability to move through content each individual already has a solid foundation in quickly while spending time on topics they need to focus on which Khan allows them to do.
Thanks for this resource! Your teacher dashboard is amazing!
