Writing proportions

I worked out the proportion below:

7 watermelons / $8.96 = 5 watermelons / $

Cross multiply the $8.96 with the 5 watermelons ; that is, $8.96 x 5 = 44.8.

Divide the product ($44.8) by 7 watermelons ; $44.8 / 7 = $6.40.

So the full proportion is:

7 watermelons / $8.96 = 5 watermelons / $6.40

You can also try the following to recheck the answer:

Divide $8.96 by 7 ; $8.96 / 7 =  $1.28

Multiply the product by 5 ; $1.28 x 5 = $6.40

This confirms the first method used.
