Hi there!
When working on Khan Academy without being logged into an account or being logged as a guest, you'll still be able to see how many points you're earning by completing tasks—reading articles, resolving exercises, watching videos, etc. However, once you log into your Khan Academy account, this progress will not be reflected, which is the intended behavior.
The banner you saw, asking you to "Log in or sign up to start saving your progress", was there to remind you that you're not logged into an account and, thus, your progress is not being saved. That being said, I'm afraid that there's no way of recovering progress done while logged out.
I advise you to make sure you're logged into your Khan Academy account before working on any of our tasks. That way the progress is sure to be saved.
