I cant figure out why the slope formula for a negative slope doesnt work when x comes from negative and you pick the point where x is zero to calculate against, ex:

Point 1 = (-1, 3)

Point 2 = (0, 1)

slope = deltaY/deltaX => (Y2 - Y1)/(X2 - X1) => (1 - 3)/(0 - 1) => -2/-1 = 2

The slope is negative but the formula shows its positive? What am i doing wrong

You got the general formula right, but you got confused on step 1 or 2.

Slope is definitely delta y/delta x, but, to make it easier, it is also y₂ - y₁/x₂ - x₁

You can plug in the coordinate values as: (1 - 3) / (0 - (-1)) which is -2/1, or -2

You were heading in the right direction, but remember the expanded version of delta y/delta x is y₂ - y₁/x₂ - x₁.
