In many of the social studies courses, discussion questions are asked, but "Tips and Thanks" isn't really appropriate for that either. Answering discussion questions are neither tips, nor thanks. In those lessons, perhaps the "Discussion" tab could be default. This would make the social studies boards more intellectually stimulating while also clearing the question boards for people with actual questions.
I don't find the "thanks" part particularly useful, and that is the vast majority of the tab. If I were to collect some data and make a pie chart of the content, I doubt the share of actual tips would be big enough to fit a label in. I think discussion is a more neutral term that doesn't encourage as much of the "I LOVE KHAN ACADEMY" spam. Can't we just have a testimonials board or something for that type of off-topic comment?
I keep hoping that people will actually put enough Tips and answers to FAQs in the tab for it to be useful. I put Tips in there. I get really tired of answering the same question over and over and over, and it would be great if people actually looked at Tips.
I would not be against separating Tips from Thanks.
Ah yes, I've noticed this as well in some of the ELA and humanities courses that have videos/articles that ask the learner to respond to a question in the discussions.
Since most of these posts don't require a response, they're supposed to post in the Tips & Thanks section so as not to clog up the Questions forum, but many do not follow these instructions (or the instructions are missing). I agree it would be best to have a separate forum for these content items, but unfortunately that's not a likely change so this is the best workaround for now.
If you see posts like this in the Questions forum, feel free to flag and we can move them to the Tips & Thanks instead.
