Need help finding proper solution to physics kinematics problem

I don't arrive at the same solution as they do. Can someone please help STEP BY STEP what happens first. I know quadratic functions, but this I don't understand. Does 1/2(-9.81) cancel out the other 1/2(-9.81)? Been trying for an hour to arrive at same solution they do, but no matter what I can't seem to get it.

I couldn't understand specifically what problem you are facing.But I can tell you that 1/2(-9.81) doesn't cancel out the other . Because one of them is in square root and so it is not equal to that which is not in square root.In solving this type of problems I suggest you to generalize the numbers inside of the square root first. then do the other stuffs.Hope it helps!
