Typing math in comment and question sections using LaTeX syntax

I like the overall concept..... But maybe something along those lines with a much simpler form of input... That's like learning a whole new language... I do believe there are far easier to use methods out there for achieving the same result

@Jeremi, well LaTeX is ubiquitous with mathematicians and those studying maths to a higher level, and the problem with trying to invent a simpler syntax is that it doesn't support the full range of mathematical expressions. There are other options such as MathML, which is harder to type manually but a bit simpler in the structure for the uninitiated, and there are tools (including open source) that will allow you to graphically build a LaTeX expression, which could be incorporated. Another advantage is that there are open source tools that will convert a LaTeX expression to plain text, which could then be read out by TTS or similar, making it more accessible to those with vision disabilities. There are also tools to convert between MathML and LaTeX syntax, for example, so it could be possible to support more than one entry method.

I definitely would like to see LaTeX implementation for questions and comments. Perhaps if usability is an issue, the site could include a documentation page for LaTeX syntax? Maybe that could even be community-driven if the workload on the KA staff is an issue. I hope this suggestion makes its way out of the mire; it would be helpful for community-based teaching.

I would like to agree completely with the author about typing in latex and also I would like to add that this issue is met quite often but not so many people can find answers in their questions. That is why I am sure that it will be useful to read this small article about using latex syntax. And also I would like to add that there are some typing in latex services in the internet which can be really helpful to those who would like to get more information about this topic. If you will have aa wish, you can just google about them.

Any updates on this? I don't think it's that hard to implement, especially with a library such as MathJax. It would make comments significantly easier to understand. 

LaTeX is distributed under a free software license (i.e. LaTeX Project Public License), so this is totally doable. (The same thing goes for the AMS package, see [1])

As for the learning curve, I learned basic syntax in just an hour or two by looking at documentation pages, such as the one at Wikipedia ([2]). People who spend a lot of time answering math questions would certainly have enough time to learn it.

Khan Academy, please add this feature; looking at non-Latex math gives me a tremendous headache!

This is a very good idea! Personally, I agree with you Thomas Horsten, especially since I just started doing the 6th grade math course and I am accustomed to reading LaTeX-generated math expressions.
