How best to help my soon to be 7th grade son in Math

Hello. My son just finished 6th grade. He goes to school in Rockland County, NY. This past year 6th grade was his first year of middle school. He had the NY Common Core Math, specifically Algebra. Overall in school he did well and made the principal's list but struggled in math. He finished the year in math with an 80. When it comes to real life, every day math he does well but again, struggled with the common core algebra. Before his final, I showed him a video from this site of a problem he was struggling with and it really helped him. So, my question is how best to use this valuable resource, Khan Academy, to help him catch up in common core 6th grade algebra before he starts his 7th grade year. Thank you in advance.

I think you already have the answer. :-) Turn him loose on 6th grade math (either the regular common core or the "Eureka Math/EngageNY" version).

As the parent, it's largely up to you to decide how to motivate him to put in the time to (a) confirm that he understands much of the material and (b) find out what he struggles with and use Khan to overcome that challenge. If he's hurting in a particular section (for example, Geometry), then he should be eager to back up a grade level or two for that sub-section and grow his way forward again.

One possibility is he could add you as a coach and you could incentivize his progress -- minor prizes for progress goals, something significant for 100% mastery; that sort of thing.
