Rename Coursework to Keep a Child's Morale Up
Let the coursework label speak to the specifics of the material itself and NOT the grade!
I am starting to homeschool a child who has had years of poor schooling experiences due to lack of caring teachers and inability to accommodate his learning differences.
He is the age of a 6th grader, but we have to do lower grade activities/exercises/courses (3rd & 4th grade) to catch him up. My hang up is this, I am certain he would experience regression in morale if I assign him coursework labeled "3rd Grade". . . though that is the material/level needed, I simply want to assign him the course material with a neutral label. One that remains true to the material, for instance "Algorithm Mathematics" or "Pre Algebra" That way I can accurately assign him the proper material for what he needs to work on despite the grade. This takes labels out of kids minds and allows them to be more open minded. We can then go further up or further back up, however much to champion their learning journey. Brilliant.org does a great job of this!
Even if it is a label you create to remain true to the course, all the while aiding the student's self confidence to learn. Essentially the teacher would have access to course materials suggested for that grade level, but the teacher assigns courses based on the specific skills/material and not the grade (at least from the students point of view)
I ADORE Khan Academy and I am so thankful for the resources you provide. If there is any way this could be brought into action this semester, it would be a miracle worker for my student and I believe for a multitude of students around the world.
