This is just something I realised about the programming community
So I've been in and out of the programming community on KA for a few years now, and I'm starting to feel like the community doesn't really quite line up with the goal of Khan Academy.
For a year or two, I was almost constantly on KA, but I didn't use it for school at all. I didn't even really do much programming myself, I was constantly looking at the cool things people had made, having random mini-conversations, and whatever else. It's been a long time since I've had issues with that, but I've noticed it in other people recently. There are a lot of people in the programming community that don't have much of a life outside of it. They sit at a computer all day, making 20-line memes with PJS and interacting with each other through KA.
Now, I don't have anything against this section of KA. I think it's a really cool opportunity, and having some social interaction mixed in with it can be really valuable to the learning process. I just think that it too easily sucks people in, and instead of helping them gain and grow useful life skills, it pulls them out of their real life and leads them instead to commit themselves to following little trends in the community and making sure everyone likes them.
I don't know if this is something that can be at all easily changed, and many people probably don't see it the way I do, but I thought it should be brought up. I don't want people to throw away the important aspects of their life just so they can play little dodge games that some fourteen year old made.
The only suggestions I have are 1: more enforcement of on-topic comments, 2: more community involvement of guardians, 3: more encouragement of high-quality programs.
I'm open to any comments people have, and I hope that whoever it applies to will give this a little bit of consideration.
I don't really expect this to go anywhere, but I thought I should say something.
Edit: Also, I think this is something that would be valuable for parents to know, because I'm sure many parents of the kids on here don't actually know much about what they're doing, and assume they're learning math, when they're actually trying to get a new record on flappy bird.
Edit #2: Also, this is a slightly different topic, but on maybe enforcing on-topic stuff more: could the leadership consider just banning the whole LGBTQ+ argument? It's been a huge problem, and it's extremely controversial, so I think it would be nice if people just weren't allowed to talk about it.
