Voting Limit

You can always wait a hour, or whatever the time limit is, and vote again then :)

I know that. I just don't understand the reason for a voting limit. Maybe so there isn't low quality projects on the HL, coming from a voting ring?

Could be for something like that, or to prevent users from spam voting every program on the hotlist.

The reason we have the voting limit is to prevent users from using lots of accounts and/or the API to vote up many programs at once. This has caused some pretty big disruptions in our community in the past, and we've found that adding a per-account vote limit is the most effective way to prevent this sort of situation from happening.

The current limit is 10 votes per hour, which means that you can vote up a project every 6 minutes. If a lot of users think this is too low, I'd be happy to suggest a higher limit to the team, but I think this rate seems fairly reasonable for the average user and has worked well in the past.

Another thing I would like to point out: If you do run out of votes, you can still leave positive comments in the Tips & Thanks section! For most users, a kind and thoughtful message is much more valuable and encouraging than an upvote!

Oh, makes much more sense now. Also, if you wanna stop bot-created accounts, you could add a limit on how many users are created per second.

I guess the only reason why an upvote might be better is to get your content featured. I don’t think the T&T does that… but I’m not entirely sure. 

Why couldn't Khan Academy have software to accurately spot bots and disable them? To make it error-safe, Khan Academy could send an email to the owner of the account, and if they respond within say, 48 hours, their account is not disabled. If they don't respond, their account is disabled and they need to verify they aren't a bot before they can access stuff on Khan Academy. Also, I'm talking about disabling accounts, not deleting them. This is to make sure that if a human slept in for 48 hours and 1 second, and missed to confirm their account was indeed, not a bot, all their hard work on Khan Academy is not lost. In order to make it so that bots don't exist, users could be randomly tested every month whether they are a bot or not.

How did all the things in the popular page get so many votes? I have seen better things in the hot list that had less than one hundred. was khan academy more popular, or is this the bot problem you are talking about?
