Thanks for writing in with your idea of making the student list more personalized so that it will be easier for teachers to be able to arrange and work from. I completely understand and I am sorry you are feeling frustrated with this. We are constantly working to add features that improve our site, and we love getting input from our community, especially our teacher community.

Hi, Kristin! As a teacher, I understand the importance of sorting by last name. I have a work-around that I use every year. It does take a few minutes at the beginning, but then you are good for the year.
Open your class and choose Students on the left to get your student roster. If you hover your mouse over the blank space to the right of their username/email, you will get an option to Edit display name. Click on that, type the name Last, First or however you want it to sort, then click save or hit enter. This change only changes your view, so no worries if the student uses Khan for more than one teacher...you aren't changing things universally.
I have around 160 students, and this really doesn't take long to do. Completely worth it for a whole year of last name sorting!
