Khan Kids: Child Exits Modules Partway Through
Hi! I love the Khan Kids app, which has taught my now-3-yo daughter a lot. With the current pandemic, I've been trying to use it more formally to cover topics that I think are just within her reach (i.e., in her zone of proximal development).
I've run into 2 issues. I'll post them as a separate questions.
My daughter will play for quite a while but rarely finishes a module, even when she can do so easily. She taps the house button and chooses a different module, which she also does partway before switching. From her perspective, I can see why she'd do that: the incentive for finishing is pretty low, with finished modules often not getting any acknowledgment, getting instead merely a screen transition back to the module menu.
An obvious solution—if you see this issue in you app usage data, assuming you have that visibility—would be to make the gamification of finishing modules more explicit and habit forming.
That would be fantastic. However, in the meantime, I'd greatly appreciate any advice on how I can help create a habit of her finishing modules. Sitting with her and encouraging finishing is somewhat effective but only helps when I have the time to do so.
Any suggestions?
