My 4th graders are embracing the mastery learning system introduced by Tim Vandenberg, and I absolutely love it!

However, the past couple of days, I have had parents saying that their kids are losing their progress. For instance, one parent said that her son hit 50% of his course mastery in 3rd grade, and now he has been reduced back down to 15%.

Is this even possible?

This is possible. Their percentage may go down, but their mastery points remain the same.

If the percentage does down, the most likely reason is that there were more skills added for that area/grade.
