Question: Using slope - intercept form. How to select the correct ordered pair to satisfy y=mx+b?

Example from practice questions:

From a graph with points we determined the ordered pairs are (0,2) and (3,-2). We have the y-intercept, so most comfortable to use slope-intercept form. dy/dx= -4/3. y = -4/3x +b. Please explain why the correct answer is y = -4/3x + 2. And not y = -4/3x -2. Thank you for your time

Kevin, the y-intercept is defined as the value of y when x = 0. Since we know that when x = 0, y = 2, the y intercept has to bef +2.

Why are you thinking that -2 might be a good answer?

When y = -2, x = 3. When you plot this on a graph, you will see it is just a point, not on the y axis.
