A particular SAT Math Question -- Interpreting Nonlinear Expressions

I do not understand this explanation. Why should we set S = K? I am trying to explain this to my students, but I do not understand it myself. Thanks for your help.
Hi Frank,
Currently, our support team doesn't provide homework help or direct assistance with understanding the content.
However, learners who are 13 years or older can access the discussion forums under each video and article to ask additional questions about the concepts covered. Additionally, we have a highly active Study Group Community forum where users can start their own study groups and address specific content-related concerns. It's a great opportunity to reach out to a global circle of learners and teachers who are always happy to help.
(Note: If you do start a new conversation, be as descriptive as possible in your topic title so that others will be able to find it, including what specific academic subject it pertains to.)
All the best,
