Reading comprehension skills for middle school kids
What can you recommend to improve the reading comprehension skills for kids in middle school?
Hi Rob,
As far as I know, Khan Academy doesn't have any material specifically geared towards reading comprehension for that age level, but Khan Academy does have some material on some higher level test reading comprehension. Here's a link to that:
There is a chance you could use some of those concepts for your class.
I also have a few tips for you from my own experience. I am an author, so reading comprehension is near and dear to me and hopefully some of my tips will help you.
-ALWAYS have your kids reading. Nothing improves the skills of comprehension more than the mind being challenged by seeing new words
-Always make sure your students have access to dictionaries and other resources if they are unsure about the meaning of words or expressions, etc.
-Give your students quizzes after a reading to gauge their comprehension level.
-Read through the book or other literary work with them and stop after every chapter to ask what they think it means, and then explain it yourself.
Hopefully some of my above answer will help you! Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
-Legolas
