Khan Academy takes a number of steps to protect the privacy of our young learners. You can find more information about how specifically we protect children's privacy by reading our Children's Privacy Policy.

To sum up, all < 13 users must have what we call a "restricted account", or "child account". These accounts have special restrictions and limitations that help protect the privacy of the user. A child under the age of 13 can't create account by themselves, but they can create an account that is linked to an account the parent owns. And as a teacher, you can create an account for them with parental permission.

This article explains how parents can create a child account for their child, and this article explains how a teacher can create an account for a student. As stated in our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, if a teacher creates an account for an underage student, it is assumed that the teacher has obtained prior consent from the child's parent or guardian. Here's an article with links to sample parent letters that you can send to parents before creating student accounts.

I do believe Khan Academy is in compliance with COPPA, and there is no chance of predators or mean people online here. I have seen some mean comments on projects every now and then, but nothing too far. I would help this helps with you getting KA back in your classroom.

Congress enacted the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in 1998.  COPPA required the Federal Trade Commission to issue and enforce regulations concerning children’s online privacy.  The Commission’s original COPPA Rule became effective on April 21, 2000.  The Commission issued an amended Rule on December 19, 2012.  The amended Rule took effect on July 1, 2013.

In enacting the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, Congress determined to apply the statute’s protections only to children under 13, recognizing that younger children are particularly vulnerable to overreaching by marketers and may not understand the safety and privacy issues created by the online collection of personal information. 

Although COPPA does not apply to teenagers, the FTC is concerned about teen privacy and does believe that strong, more flexible, protections may be appropriate for this age group.  See FTC Report: Protecting Consumer Privacy in an Era of Rapid Change:  Recommendations for Businesses and Policymakers (Mar. 2012), at 29, 60.  The FTC also has issued a number of guidance documents for teens and their parents.  These educational materials are available at www.OnguardOnline.gov.

That says that anyone 13 or older does NOT apply to COPPA.

And in that i think that COPPA only apply to 13- Accounts. (Students and children).

I really want to thank everyone who provided me solutions and options to continue using KA. We did it, school administration finally realized that KA is COPPA compliance.
