2018 Summer Evaluation Project

Throughout this past summer, retired Guardian Inger Hohler and I ran a 6-week long special project geared towards teaching students how to provide high quality project evaluations to peer users in the CS community. Throughout the project, the members received individualized feedback on their evaluations from Inger, as well as one of our peer teachers Admiral βetasin, and had the opportunity to participate in 5 live workshops (plus an additional one for advanced students). At the conclusion of this project, we put together a report of common misconceptions and functionality problems relating to project evaluations, and have sent that report to KA for review.

Throughout the entire project, the group was able to evaluate 1,117 projects as a whole. The group also reported 280 faulty evaluations by other evaluators, as well as 71 projects that violated our Program Guidelines. Their help in reporting these evaluations and projects has been greatly appreciated!

During the project, 10 of the project participants achieved the requirements for a certificate of participation, and 2 participants earned their Instructor Certificate, which will allow them to help peer teach in future projects.

We would like to thank the 10 participants (Admiral βetasin, Coder Mom, Elijah, FadingPixel, Hopper Is Me, Larry Serflaten, Lin Gh., LNY, mechatrilobite, pinkpuppy22) for all of their time and hard work put into this project. We have greatly enjoyed working with them and watching their evaluation skills grow! They’ve all came a long ways through the project, and we hope each of them was able to take something away from this project!

We would also like to thank Larry Serflaten for his professional CS help while we worked to revise some of our teaching resources and curriculum. Larry was able to help clarify several of our misconceptions, and his help has been greatly appreciated!

I would personally like to thank Inger Hohler for all the work she has put into these projects. Without her time and dedication, these projects would not be possible! Her time spent giving feedback on hundreds of evaluations, putting together information and teaching resources, as well as planning and organizing these projects is greatly appreciated, and has certainly helped better the community!
