New answer keyboard

Also, occasionally when it first load a unit, it looks like this. It fixes itself when it go out and come back in, though. 

I’m seeing a few changes in the iPad app, too. I like having the keyboard instead of the handwriting area, but if it’s missing a key part of the answer, that’s not going to be good. I have already submitted a ticket concerning the poorly-formatted answer choices, and I suggest that you do this, too. I have also reported other issues although not one regarding missing keyboard items. The ones I’ve touched upon are:

1. Check button appears only in one orientation - landscape or portrait - but not both. This varies from practice to practice and does not appear to be controllable (such as always the same orientation in which I enter the practice at the beginning). I prefer to do my problems in portrat orientation, so when the Check button appears in landscape, I have to do the problems in my non-preferred mode.

2. Sketch/scratch pad no longer has the Undo tool. I would rather use Undo than the Eraser when I want to correct my most recent item.

3. When I close the sketch/scratch pad toolbar, what I’ve written/sketched disappears.

Other things I have not yet reported:

When a free-form answer is required (as opposed to a multiple choice or drop down answer), I can’t type into the box (using the new keyboad) unless I remove the sketch/scratcch pad toolbar, which of course makes what I’ve written disappear. This means that I can’t refer to my calculated answer when entering it in its official place.

5. After I complete a practice, when I come back to the selection page for the videos, articles, and practices, the practice is shown in the dark blue signifying completion, but the percentage score does not appear in parentheses after the practice name. When I exit the topic page and then come back in, a score materializes, but instead of 100% (and I choose Practice Again from the summary page until I get 100%), it shows 1%. This does, however, eventually correct itself, but it drives me crazy.

I suggest that you report your problems, using the Report a problem link at the top of this page (near the righthand side), so that Khan Academy will know about it.

Also, did the use of the cosine reciprocal for secant work for you? If it does, it should serve as a workaround. If not, this should be an escaated problem for the Khan Academy development team.

I strongly dislike the new keyboard within the mobile app and wish to resume using my Apple Pencil to input answers. It is not that I find the keyboard to be flawed for what it is, it is that I strongly prefer to handwrite. Perhaps allowing a user to toggle between their preferred method would settle this trouble.

The new implementation has caused me to feel discouraged about using KA. Please restore handwriting input.

Oh yeah, I noticed that other sketch pad stuff too. I suspect the “undo” button is underneath the bottom bar, but yes, the lack of it is annoying (especially when I accidentally draw lines all over my work because it doesn’t scroll any more).

No, I just got the “close but no cigar” message.

The lesson here is, don’t wish for what you want, you may actually get it. I had been wishing for a calculator-like entry format for iPad practice exercises, which were already in use in the iPad app for the problems found in articles. (Ironically, on the web site, it had been just the opposite - practice exercises use the calculator-like interface for entry, while problems in articles use typing input.)

But if the handwriting area got removed and then replaced by the calculator-like entry at the cost of having an Undo tool, not being able to scroll the sketchpad, not allowing answer entry (including multiple choice and dropdown selection problems as well as those input via the calculator-like tool), and not being able to keep Check in one of the orientations, then I would like to see the iPad app reverted to an earlier version that has all of the features we had gotten used to.
