Dark Mode
It would be nice to have an option for dark mode because all my other apps and websites have it and when I go here its like a shock to the eyes
Can you please just add it instead of reusing this response? please, people actually want dark mode and this has been going on for 4 whole years.
I fully support this feature too.
Any news on this, there seems to be a ton of requests for this feature over multiple years. I was wondering if it is in the works, it is on the list of things to do, or if it isn't even on the list of things to do.
I support this, I'd love to see the dark mode as well, the amount of white is very tiring for the eyes even during daytime.
Same here We should just have the option instead of just getting an extension for just THIS website. It is a very well-needed feature and should be on here. Also, I feel like since there are a lot of people asking for it they should at least try it. and if it doesn't work it doesn't work.
i would love the dark mode too
Hi everyone,
Thank you for continuing the conversation and sharing your thoughts about dark mode!
I wanted to clarify that the Dark Reader browser extension we recommend is actually free to use. While the developers suggest a $9.99 donation, it’s completely optional—not required. The extension is also open-source, so schools and organizations can modify it if needed. Additionally, it does not collect any user data. I’ve tested this extension myself and found that it works reasonably well on Khan Academy, especially when using the "Dynamic" theme generation mode.
As for adding an official dark mode directly to Khan Academy, we definitely understand how helpful it would be, especially for those studying at night. It’s something our team has explored. However, implementing a dark mode across a platform as large and complex as Khan Academy would require significant engineering and design resources. We’d need to:
Because we focus most of our engineering and design resources on developing core learning features and keeping Khan Academy free for everyone, we haven’t been able to prioritize this yet, and it’s unlikely that a native dark mode will be available in the foreseeable future.
That said, we truly value your feedback and have shared it with our team so they can consider it as we plan future improvements. We have an existing tracker for Dark Mode requests and will continue to add new user feedback/posts to it in the future.
Thanks again for your input and for helping make Khan Academy better!
Ah, thanks for clarifying. completely understand your point of view. Wishing you all the best with future improvements.
firyboy,
They apparently need more than 2 months to make a couple of fixes to a video transcript, so I doubt they have the staff to divert from everything else to make a change that involves switching the colors for the entire website in just a few months. (If you have experience building or maintaining a website similar to Khan Academy, I will acknowledge you know more about it than I do. If you are basing your guess on writing individual programs or individual web pages, then I don't think you understand how an integrated website works and how complicated the change would be.)
Yes, me too. Dark mode would be great for studying at night.
dark mode pleaseeeee
i probably dont fully understnad how complicated it is, though your explanation does make sence as to why it would be rather hard to add
Hi Mk!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on a dark mode for Khan Academy to help you study at night. We are always working to add features that improve our site, and we love getting input from our community.
I've passed your feedback along to the team and it will be part of our conversation as we plan the future of Khan Academy.
In the meantime, you can search for browser extensions that can help you view not only Khan Academy in dark mode but other websites as well. There is an extension called "Dark Reader" that can be installed on browsers such as Google Chrome and Firefox and it works really well.
Thanks for helping improve Khan Academy!
Just use 1 CSS file, also the same for the JS file, and make a function to make it so that if the user clicks on a button, it just switches to dark mode. You could even do it where it is only for that one page, much simpler. Still, I do get that it would be hard to add, considering I've seen how hard it is just to make an expanding box that only expands when you click on it, so I sympathize. Still, I do think it could be added fairly shortly so this whole 4-year issue could be solved in tops a matter of months, and people would stop complaining.
While using Chrome extensions is a viable option, i would just like to have it in the actual site
