Adding Parent Emails to Existing Student Accounts

Hello @Akent! My name is Lisa Krueger and I am a Khan Academy Ambassador teaching in Chicago. It took me a little time poking around the site and not finding anything, so I logged in as one of my 4th grade students and saw that they're prompted to add their parent's email. This might be the easiest way to add the parent's email. I've included a screen shot below. Hopefully, this helps. Please let me know if it doesn't work. Thank you for posting.

I have the same problem, but I don't see the bar at the top of all my students' screens. Do you know how I can add in the emails without the bar?

They should be able to add parents and coaches by going to the "Coaches" tab of their profile.

Let me know if that doesn't work!

It doesn't work. How can I add parents' account for my students without bar pop-up.

I, too, am having this same struggle.  The bar at the top is not appearing to prompt students for a parent email, and I am not able to add the parent as a coach under the coaching tab -- neither from the student login or my login.  Please help!

Hello all! I reached out to the Khan Academy developers and they are requesting that users complete a Service Request ticket and would really appreciate if you could upload a screen shot that is missing the Add parent email bar. Please let me know if the issue is not resolved. Thank you for posting. 

@Lisa Krueger There used to be a way to add a parent's email address within the coach's view of a student. Now I can't find it. Where did it go? Or can you tell me where it is? I don't see the profile tab when looking at a student as a coach. I don't know why it has to be so complicated. It is clear from searching the FAQ and forum that many teachers are wasting a lot of time trying to figure out the answer to a frequent question.

Hello Sonja! I completely agree that the "update" was not necessarily a good thing for all areas! So, this is one of the features that was "reworked" and made a little less intuitive - in their defense the Khan developers felt having parent's add their emails would save teachers time but I think both options should have been kept. Here's the new way . . .

1. click the Resources tab
2. click K-12 Teachers
3. click Safety, privacy, and additional resources
4. click Share with parents
5. click Parent letter
6. scroll down to preferred language and print off

This will set up a Parent account - which in my experience not all parents are interested in - a work around might be to have your students work through these steps (or do it for those students who you want to add emails) . . .

       If you’d like, you can set up a parent/guardian account and follow along your child’s progress in 5 quick steps:

1. Log-in to Khan Academy with your child using the account information given in class
2. Click on their Username → Settings in the upper right corner.
3. Enter your email address in the “Parent Email” Field
4. Check your inbox for an email from Khan Academy
5. Follow the sign-in or log-in prompts to get started.

I quit using KHAN because it has become so cumbersome just to add students. My students are second language users in Thailand, many of whom don't have the internet at home, and no one in their families have internet accounts nor emails. It is also difficult for the students to understand how to navigate KAHN's site, (It is difficult even for us who use internet accounts all the time), and the restrictions have made it impractical to use as a classroom tool. A teacher should have total access to add, remove, or edit changes to all of their student's accounts. My daughter, (A university student and very internet savvy), and I have spent over three hours just trying to add an email address to a 10 year old student's account. This is foolish, but reminded me why I quit using Khan last year. I could create a new account for my student, but then I don't have the ability to delete the old account. Someone needs to have a serious conversation with your programmers. Khan is not a bank nor a stock advisor.

I genuinely understand how confusing and frustrating this must be. It’s possible that my comment will be a bit long, I ask you to please bear with me.

• Students that are under 13 years old

You mentioned that your daughter and you spent over three hours trying to add an email address to a 10-year-old student's Khan Academy account.

It's possible that the student in question has a child account (our system was able to recognize that they're under 13 years old). As a child, they're not able to add an email address to their account. This is because some features are restricted or modified on child accounts to help protect their privacy.

I'm happy to inform you that teachers are now fully able to access their students' settings and make changes on their behalf!

You can edit your students' nicknames, usernames, reset their passwords, gender, primary language, date of birth, and accessibility settings. For a complete guide on how to do so, please check out this article.
