How to turn off captions/subtitles by default?

I would like to know the answer to this as well, it's annoying having to turn it off for every video.

Please help with this issue!!  I wholehearted agree that I want the default to be off.

I love you Khan Academy and all the hard work put into the closed caption translations by all the volunteers, but I agree that this is an unnecessary annoyance that deserves some attention.

I will agree with the others here. I would like to be able to have the cc off by default at my choice. I think it is great that everything is completely closed captioned, and it might even be best to have them on unless you set something in your profile so everyone knows they are there. But I have the same experience as others here. When I am able to listen, the captions distract me from the video.

I've turned off the default behavior at YouTube, and that should be reflected in every play thereafter. It's distracting to the experience to feel the need to turn these off - every single time. It's poor user experience - let me focus on learning - not defeating the player.

Due to a software glitch, it's impossible to turn off the sub-titles on the videos, even on an individual basis. Selecting the "off" option and pressing "done" does not work! Because a large portion of Sal's equations is blocked by these useless sub-titles, this degrades the video considerably.

Indeed, subtitles activation is hardcoded into the video url.

I have written a userscript for browser to fix it.

To use it firstly you will need to install a browser extension to handle userscripts - Tampermonkey for Chrome/Microsoft Edge/Safari/Opera/Firefox or Greasemonkey for Firefox should suffice. Then you will need to open the userscript page and click the blue `install` button.

@Hodorious, huh, I didn't really expect anyone to use it.

It hasn't been working well though (khan academy page updates are little tricky), so I fixed the script and added auto updates support.

I would also like an answer to this issue. There should be an option to turn them off site-wide by default if you don't want to see the captions. It's a pain to have to turn them off for every single video, especially when you're watching multiple videos in a single sitting.

Wonderful to have the option of subtitles, but would be great if turning off by default was also an option.

I've been struggling to add something that defaults the playback speed to 2 but I can't seem to figure it out. Do you have a way I can add that to the original script you wrote?

Just install the "Video Speed Controller" extension for Google Chrome. 

Switching all the subtitles to black font is a pretty good bandaid solution. Every now and again you get a few temporary black lines through what's on the board, but that's liveable, and it seems to remember the setting between videos. To do: click the cogwheel on the video: click subtitles/CC: click "options": click "font color": select "Black" at the end of the list.  

This sure is an annoying issue. But reducing the size to 50% makes it less annoying.
