Update: Percentages added back to Subject navigation view
Good afternoon! On behalf of the KA team, I wanted to talk about what some of you have already noted, percentages being been added back to the subject menu on Khan Academy.
I can once again gloat over my early math mastery
The percentages were initially removed for three main reasons:
1) We don't think that percentages in their current iteration are entirely clear - does % refer to the amount of content you've completed, as opposed to mission mastery? It's never really explained and casual users might not pick up on the difference.
2) While the percentage is helpful for those working their way through an entire subject area’s mission, it wasn't relevant for people who were visiting our site looking to learn something very specific (which is the bulk of our overall users). Their mission percentage basically always stayed low in the subjects they've worked in, and many users we spoke to didn't find the percentages helpful.
3) The design team was aiming to clean up the navigation menu, allowing more content to be exposed in that screen.
While these points still basically ring true, the outpouring of feedback we received once they were removed was very clear - for many of our most dedicated users, this was an extremely motivating and helpful tool for navigating mission progress. Percentages were by far the biggest topic we heard feedback on after the redesign.
The team is continuing to work on improving the site in many ways, but in the short term they wanted to bring back percentage progress in order to address this very strong community sentiment. Many team members agreed with the points being made, but previously didn't know how much that opinion was represented in the larger community.
So thank you to everyone who took the time to submit a comment - please keep the feedback coming! While we can't promise to get to every feature request, it's so helpful to hear your thoughts on how you use Khan Academy.
