New Badges + Re-Introduction of Streaks to Help Students Stay Focused
I recognize that this has been beat into the ground at this point, but gamifying learning via badges is a great way for students to stay engaged, especially those with ADHD and struggle with staying focused on studying. It is a shame that students can play video games for hours on end, but cannot stay focused on education for more than a couple minutes. The integration of both via badges would be a great way to revitalize the site and motivate these students. I find myself using energy point goals in my own mind to help me stay consistent with studying, but I miss the times when I was new to this site, excited to complete ALL the available badges that Khan had a couple years ago. I would love to see more badges than the few remaining on this site or at least the re-introduction of old ones, which would help motivate students to stay on the site longer.
Another suggestion that I would have is the re-introduction of streaks, displaying the consistency a student has over a period of time. The best way to learn is consistency, and the removal of streaks is analogous to Khan Academy removing the instruction of this habit to students as a whole. Building a habit of studying is vital for learners, and streaks were a great way to dial that in. Eventually, studying would be ingrained in a student's daily schedule, similar to brushing one's teeth or showering. Hopefully, at the very least a simple line chart documenting increase in energy points can be implemented, further encouraging students to spend more time on the site.
It is sad to see these features removed as a result of the port over, but I really wish that they would re-introduce it as the two aforementioned are great ways to promote student engagement.
