Having the option to turn off notifications

I totally agree. There needs to be a way to at least disable these. Some people might like them, but I personally find them very annoying and frustrating. As you can see in my attached screen shot, these things are constantly blocking or distracting my view and making learning more difficult. Please fix.

I absolutely agree. They're helpful to begin with, but distracting and actually block some of the visual content. Would love to be able to get rid of them. Maybe a toggle switch like there is for the CC would work.

I would also like to turn off notifications and so surprised that this request is going on over 5 years and we're still being distracted by them! This is an accessibility problem and the fact that this site has not accommodated this request is quite disappointing.

I would like to add that the site disables full screen after every video, so I would really appreciate if there were less distractions on it. The notifications are very distracting, and because the notifications themselves are hidden you create a false sense of urgency to check them, and yet there are no awards that are significant to the learning process, let alone actually being significant enough to need to put them on every single page you are on. A toggle switch would suffice. You could also give each user the ability to only have them displayed when on the profile page. That would be much more usable.

Yes,  I agree. Please, Khan Academy, provide a way to turn off all those cute notifications.

Agreed, it's extremely destracting

Give users the options to turn off the gamification. Not everyone wants it. I find it very distracting too.

I am not worried about notifications during the videos as much as I am interested in having the ability to turn off the distraction of notifications in general. If someone on the Khan Academy team reads this, and you could link to the notifications on the open source project, I would be glad to add this feature myself. I know few people have a vested interest in this feature, but I would benefit greatly from the ability to turn off notifications.

I just want the badge notifications to be optional. It would be lovely if that happened.

I like the gamification in general, but the "Energy Points" notification in videos is indeed annoying!

I agree.  The notifications do not need to be removed, just the option to hide them.

I never use it but always have to fiddle with it because it gets in the way

I too am finding the notifications distracting. Every second video is being interupted by a new badge for listening for 15 minutes. I have managed to turn of some sounds, but would really like to prevent notifications from interrupting my learning.

At the very least it would be good if notifications at least would not interrupt a video, but only show at the end. Preferably I would be able to turn off all notifications about badges completely, but keep the ones about replies to questions/answers/comments. I would also take them being turned off as notifications, as long as I can still click somewhere to find out new responses to questions etc.

A workaround to hide the "x energy points" notifications is to install the Stylebot Chrome extension:

... then follow these steps:

1. Go to a khanacademy.org page where a video is playing.

2. Open the Stylebot extension using the Chrome dropdown menu in the top right corner of the browser. After you click the extension's icon, you will also have to click the "Open Stylebot" option. This should add a narrow pane on the right side of the website.

3. Choose the "< > Code" tab from the bottom of that narrow pane.

4. Paste in this CSS text into the blank white area:

.ka-video-player + div[aria-hidden="false"] {
  display: none;
}

5. Click the X button at the top right of that pane to close Stylebot.

This will hide the div that is supposed to show the energy points, and the extension will save these settings and apply them to any khanacademy.org page you visit. Hope this helps until they add the option to disable those notifications.

for some reason sometimes I cannot use the keyboard, space key to stop videos. in that case no way but I need to use mouse and hold mouse on the screen, and you know, the score point bar is so much distracting. 

I so agree!  I am working on a smaller laptop screen and too frequently these unrelated energy point messages block the equation being worked out.  It definitely does nothing for me but add stress.

I agree. I would love to hear any speculation about why there is no option to turn off gamification. It would seem supersimple to do. 

Would it cut into their profits or something? Genuinely seeking to understand.

Edit: I see that if you move the cursor outside of the video window, the energy points disappear. 

Go to full screen mode of the video and the energy points pop up will disappear. :) 

I have a partial solution (checked only on firefox): install uBlock Origin, it allows hiding most of elements on any website in a matter of a few clicks.
(it won't work on a video player though, so u can't hide "energy points")

Why after all these years is this still a problem. I am here to learn no be annoyed with usless pop ups!!!

Year 9 of people asking for the ability to disable this "feature". I can't see the equations I'm trying to learn. Really frustrating.
