I've mentioned elsewhere that being able to make neat work is a critical step in doing math and physics. While the link below is not a complete solution, it is open source, (MIT License) and may be a base for an internal KA drawing program.

SVG-edit is not under active development. However the code base is there, and can be glommed by anyone. As it stands right now, it's overkill -- I think you'd want to prune it, make it simpler so that it took up less screen. It would also be necessary to merge in the ascii to equation functionality.

That said, it could be used as the entire presentation engine with some extension.
