9-multiples using Make10
Kahn Academy has a section on how to multiply by 7, 8, 9....however, I did not see a video nor a method for the 9-multiples. Here is a method that makes the 9s easier to calculate than the 2s are to memorize!
To calculate the 9s: Look at the multiplier - count it back one AND make it a 10. Both operations are on the same number. No juggling numbers in and out of the brain's 'register'. It takes a 6-year-old (that knows Make10) less than a minute to pair the two steps.
...and saves an hour or two otherwise WASTED looking up/memorizing the 9s. Plus, it's an opportunity to practice and build on the valuable math skill of Making10.
In fact, why not use this as a Make10 exercise? There are dozens of Make10 exercises and games - this one is a twofer. It’s easier than most Make10 exercises since there is no remainder to carry. It’s one of the first practical applications of Make10 for early elementary school students.
This method simply links two skills that are part of the K/1st Grade curriculum (Count Back from 10 & Make 10). They learn these first because they are the simplest/fastest.
This method is fast for three reasons:
1) ONE number stays in the brain’s ‘register’ for both steps.
2) The first step is a count back (minus 1). Most students know how to do a countdown from 10. They don’t do it by subtracting 1 each time. They just know what comes next.
3) The second step is Make10. In the example below we added 6 to 4 to Make10. After K and 1st graders learn Make10, they do not do it by going through an equation. They fill the 'space' between the starting number and 10. The mind snaps forward to 10 because 10 is 'magnetic'.
Here is a video explaining the method. You are welcome to use it or copy the format - or better yet - improve it. Been trying to share this for years. Students collectively waste millions of hours per year on the 9s. Most of them have some catching up to do. Let's take this one off the list.
